The ruins of the once impressive Burgruine Große Lauenburg can be found on top of the Großer Kalmberg in Thale, Germany. The romantic castle ruin offers a wonderful view of the region and the well-known tourist destination Heinrich Heine-Fels. The castle was first mentioned in 1179 and probably served mostly a defensive purpose rather than a residential one. Since 1851, the ruin has been owned by the state of Saxony-Anhalt and is accessible to visitors free of charge. The 24 hectare area offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy. Hiking trails lead through the romantic ruin, past the remains of a castle chapel, along a steep path down to the valley. From there, visitors can explore the mountain ranges and the old tree population of the region. Also worth seeing is the unique waterfall of the Burgruine Große Lauenburg which cascades from the mountain to the valley.
