Burg und Kloster Oybin crowns a sandstone outcrop above the village of Oybin in Saxony’s Zittau Mountains. Medieval castle ruins share the summit with the remains of a Celestine monastery founded under Emperor Charles IV. The roofless Gothic church has tall pointed windows that frame trees and sky, while its masonry rises directly from the natural rock. The ruins drew Romantic-era artists, including Caspar David Friedrich, and their weathered arches still give the summit its distinctive silhouette.
