Burg Tangermünde is a rare example of 11th-century castle architecture, located in the town of Tangermünde in Germany. It is among the best-preserved castles in the country and it stands proud on the banks of the Elbe River. First a demonstration of the power of the local Abotrup family and later controlled by the town itself, this castle is an impressive sight, with walls seven feet thick in places and a striking main tower. The main entrance provides access to the courtyard, with the Chapel of St. John, granary, and other buildings lining the outer walls. The interior of Burg Tangermünde is home to a historical museum, with documents and objects from the town's past, such as the Tangermünde city book from the year 1615. The castle is the traditional venue for the Tangermünde Festival, with a range of cultural activities taking place throughout the year.
