📍 From Bundesterrasse, Switzerland
Bern’s Bundeshaus is the seat of Switzerland’s federal parliament and government, standing above the Aare on the southern edge of the Old Town. Its central parliamentary building, opened in 1902, joins two administrative wings in a monumental sandstone ensemble crowned by a green copper dome. The architecture gives physical form to Switzerland’s federal system: the National Council and Council of States meet here, representing the people and the cantons. On the north side, Bundesplatz provides an open view of the façade; its fountain has 26 jets, one for each canton, adding movement to the otherwise formal civic setting. To the south, the Bundesterrasse shifts the view from monumental architecture to the river valley, with the Bernese Alps visible in clear weather.
