Brunico, or Bruneck in German, is the principal town of South Tyrol’s Puster Valley, set along the Rienza River beneath the Dolomites and the broad Kronplatz mountain. Its compact medieval center reflects the region’s Italian-German character: Via Centrale, known locally as Stadtgasse, runs between old town gates and is lined with narrow, colorful façades, arcades, signs, and shopfronts. Above the rooftops, Bruneck Castle occupies a wooded rise and houses the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa, devoted to mountain peoples and cultures. The elevated castle area reveals the town’s clearest visual layers—historic roofs and church towers in the foreground, forested slopes behind, and pale Alpine peaks closing the horizon.
