Bratislavský hrad, or Bratislava Castle, crowns a rocky hill above the Danube at the western edge of Bratislava’s Old Town. Its massive white rectangular block and four corner towers form one of the Slovak capital’s most recognizable silhouettes, reflecting the hill’s long strategic importance on routes through the Danube basin. The castle evolved through medieval and Baroque phases, was devastated by fire in 1811, and regained its present form through 20th-century reconstruction. Today it houses historical collections of the Slovak National Museum. Broad terraces frame views across the river, the city’s red roofs, modern bridges, and toward Austria, while the restored formal garden adds geometric paths, clipped greenery, and strong architectural symmetry.
