Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, stands on the Danube close to the borders with Austria and Hungary. Its compact Old Town reflects centuries of Central European history, including its role as a coronation city of the Kingdom of Hungary, when it was known as Pressburg. St Martin’s Cathedral, where Hungarian monarchs were crowned, rises beside the historic center, while Bratislava Castle anchors the skyline with pale walls and four corner towers. Narrow streets and pastel façades contrast with the bold engineering of the SNP Bridge, whose flying-saucer-shaped observation deck is one of the city’s most recognizable modern landmarks. From the Danube’s south bank, the castle, cathedral spire and bridge form a layered panorama, bringing the city’s royal past and 20th-century transformation into the same frame.
