📍 From Inside, Vatican City
Braccio Nuovo, the “New Wing” of the Vatican Museums, is a neoclassical sculpture gallery adjoining the Museo Chiaramonti. Commissioned by Pope Pius VII in the early 19th century, it expanded the setting for the papal antiquities collection after works taken to France during the Napoleonic era were returned. Its long, vaulted hall arranges ancient statues and portrait busts among marble columns and recessed niches, with overhead daylight illuminating the sculpture and ancient mosaics incorporated into the floor. Highlights include the Augustus of Prima Porta, depicting the emperor in an elaborately decorated breastplate, and the monumental reclining personification of the Nile, surrounded by small figures and river imagery. The gallery’s repeated architectural bays create a strong central perspective, while the varied colors of the marble contrast with the pale sculpture.
