📍 Czechia
Boží muka is a small Christian wayside shrine in Pavlov, a historic wine-growing village below the limestone ridges of the Pálava Hills in South Moravia. The Czech term, literally “God’s torment,” refers to devotional monuments traditionally placed beside roads, paths, fields, or crossroads as expressions of faith and remembrance. Its modest proportions reflect the intimate religious character of the rural landscape, contrasting with Pavlov’s vineyard slopes and broad skies. Simple masonry, a niche or sacred image, and the surrounding agricultural setting provide the shrine’s most recognizable visual elements.
