📍 From Port of Nafplion, Greece
Bourtzi Castle is a Venetian fortress located in the city of Nafplio in Greece. Built in 1471 by the Venetians, this impressive castle stands on a tiny islet near the harbor of Nafplio. Unlike other fortresses in Greece, the Bourtzi Castle is unique due to its circular form and its impressive architectural style. For 400 years, the castle served as the entrance to the city and since the dissolution of the Venetian influence in Greece, the castle was abandoned. Still, its walls and towers are largely intact and offer spectacular views of the Old Town and the harbor. Access to this historical site is only by boat, making a visit even more special. Within the castle, there is a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Mary which makes the atmosphere even more sacred. Visit the site and take in the view of the impressive multi-colored ancient buildings!
