📍 Nepal
Boudhanath Stupa is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site in northeastern Kathmandu, anchoring the Boudha neighborhood with its monasteries, Tibetan shops, and daily rituals. Its vast whitewashed dome rises from stepped terraces to a square tower bearing the Buddha’s watchful eyes on all four sides, crowned by a gilded spire. The surrounding neighborhood is an important center of Tibetan Buddhist life in Nepal, shaped in part by Tibetan communities who settled here. Strings of prayer flags stretch outward from the summit, creating colorful diagonals above the dome’s curved surface. Around its base, devotees turn prayer wheels and walk clockwise in the devotional circuit known as kora; their movement gives a sense of scale to the stupa and makes religious practice an essential part of the scene.
