📍 Italy
Bologna, the capital of Emilia-Romagna, is a compact university city shaped by medieval streets, red-brick architecture and an extensive network of porticoes. Its historic core gathers around Piazza Maggiore, where the unfinished façade of the Basilica of San Petronio contrasts with surrounding civic palaces, while the leaning Asinelli and Garisenda towers remain defining markers of the skyline. The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, has influenced the city’s scholarly and cosmopolitan character for centuries. Visually, Bologna is recognized by warm terracotta roofs, shadowed arcades, worn stone paving and the repeating columns of its UNESCO-listed porticoes. Elevated views reveal a dense red cityscape edged by the foothills of the Apennines, while street-level scenes often frame bicycles, market activity and café life beneath the arches.
