Meteora is a stunning mountain range located near the city of Kalambaka in central Greece. Here, towering cliffs provide the perfect backdrop for numerous monasteries dating back to the Byzantine era. As one of the most important centers of Eastern Orthodox monasticism, the Meteora region is home to 24 monasteries. These monasteries, perched atop vertical cliffs and joined to the mainland by long, winding staircases and walkways, provide a stunning contrast to the landscape, and offer visitors peaceful respite from the rush of modern life. Within the monasteries, one finds a living history of religious tradition and art, with artwork and frescoes decorating many of the churches. Visitors can tour the interior of the monasteries, including the catacombs, and can also explore the surrounding gardens, courtyards, and small villages. Be sure to pay attention to local dress and customs, as this is an especially Holy site for locals.
