📍 From Sgùrr na Banachdaich, United Kingdom
The Black Cuillin form the jagged mountain spine of the Isle of Skye, rising above Glenbrittle on the range’s western side. Built largely from dark gabbro and basalt, they contrast with the softer, rounded granite hills of the Red Cuillin farther east. Glaciers carved deep corries and steep rock walls, leaving a skyline of sharp summits and narrow ridges that has become central to Scottish mountaineering. Among them is Sgùrr Alasdair, Skye’s highest peak at 992 metres. From Glenbrittle, green lower slopes give way to scree and dark buttresses, making the transition from valley to mountain especially striking. Low cloud can conceal the crest while leaving individual pinnacles exposed, emphasizing the fractured outline and immense scale of the rock faces.
