Birbal’s Palace is a compact, richly ornamented residence within the imperial complex of Fatehpur Sikri, the Mughal capital established by Emperor Akbar near Agra. Its familiar name links it to Birbal, Akbar’s celebrated courtier, though the building’s original occupant is not securely established. Carved from the city’s characteristic red sandstone, the two-storey structure combines Mughal planning with decorative forms drawn from Indian building traditions, including deep eaves, elaborate brackets, projecting balconies and varied roof forms. Close views reveal dense geometric and floral carving, while wider compositions emphasize the warm masonry, balanced proportions and strong interplay of sunlight and shadow that distinguish Fatehpur Sikri’s palace architecture.
