📍 United States
Big Thompson Canyon cuts through Colorado’s Front Range west of Loveland, with the small community of Drake near the meeting of the Big Thompson River and its North Fork. U.S. Highway 34 follows the river between steep, weathered rock walls on the approach to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. The canyon’s narrow scale makes its flood history especially significant: destructive floods in 1976 and 2013 reshaped the corridor, and later road reconstruction altered sections of the river and highway. Photographs often emphasize the contrast between pale, rugged cliffs, rushing water, curving pavement, and autumn cottonwoods along the canyon floor.
