Big Ben is the nickname of the Great Bell inside Elizabeth Tower, the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster beside the River Thames. The name is also widely used for the tower itself, whose Gothic Revival stonework, gilded details and four large clock faces have become symbols of London and British parliamentary life. Completed in 1859, the tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. From Westminster Bridge, its vertical silhouette rises above the ornate Houses of Parliament, while views from across the Thames place it within a broader riverside skyline; after dark, illuminated clock faces and reflections on the water give the familiar landmark a more graphic character.
