Big Almaty Peak surrounds the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. It's the highest peak in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain range, rising to an elevation of 4,000 meters or 13,123 ft. It's a great spot for trekking and rock climbing, and provides stunning views of the Almaty region. Access to the peak is via a fairly steep 5.5 mile hike up the Almaty Nature Reserve. Be sure to carry plenty of water and snacks with you as the trail can be very strenuous - and does not have any restaurants or shops. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and snow along the path, even in summertime. The peak offers a unique insight into the local flora and fauna, including bears and snow leopards. So bring your binoculars and prepare to be enchanted.
