
Bete Maryam, in Lalibela, Ethiopia is one of the most impressive churches of the Lalibela complex. The church is carved from a single block of red volcanic rock and features double-story porticoes and string-like windows. Bete Maryam is a spiritually significant destination, as it holds a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, and has a treasury which holds a number of ancient artifacts. Visitors to Bete Maryam often comment about the solemn atmosphere, the hauntingly beautiful singing of pilgrims, and the feeling of being in a place of great significance. Bete Maryam is also the tallest church in Lalibela, with an impressive form that is visible from all around. Visitors can access the church via a pair of doors at the eastern side.
