📍 Norway
Besseggen is a sharp mountain ridge in Jotunheimen National Park, in Vågå municipality, linking the Gjendesheim and Memurubu areas above Lake Gjende. The route is renowned for the view down both sides of the crest: emerald Gjende lies almost 400 metres below deep-blue Bessvatnet, whose higher basin creates the striking stacked-lake perspective seen in classic photographs. Gjende’s green tone comes from fine glacial sediment suspended in the water, while the clearer Bessvatnet appears much darker. Exposed rock, a narrow scrambling section and broad views toward Jotunheimen’s peaks give the landscape its scale and drama. The ridge also has a literary place in Norwegian culture through Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, whose wild reindeer ride is associated with the Besseggen area.
