Besalú is a small town (population 2,000) in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the province of Girona and is located in the picturesque region of Garrotxa. Once the capital of the county of Besalú, it is today known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. Besalú is also known for its Besalu Bridge, a Romanesque bridge, 10-15 metres wide, constructed in the 12th Century. There are a multitude of small streets and alleyways winding up a hill to the old bridge that cross the Fluvià River. These cobbled streets are filled with all sorts of churches, palaces, arches and squares. One of the most outstanding landmarks in Besalú is the 12th-Century Romanesque church of Sant Vicens. It is a beautiful and imposing structure that serves as a great photo spot. The Plaza de la Llibertat is the main square in Besalú and it is filled with restaurants and cafés. Besalú also has its own museum, with exhibits reflecting its culture and history. The old Jewish Quarter is also well worth a visit, with its old Synagogue, which dates back to the 13th century. Besalú offers many unique and beautiful views and there is much to explore in this charming town.
