The Berlin Wall Memorial is a memorial to the division of Germany during the Cold War. It is located in Berlin’s central Mitte district, just steps away from the Brandenburg Gate. The memorial consists of the remnants of the original Berlin Wall, a visitor centre and an open-air exhibit. Built in 1998, it is a reminder of a city divided and the people who were impacted by the Berlin Wall’s construction in 1961. Here visitors can get an idea of just how oppressive the wall was, since it still runs for a considerable distance through the centre of Berlin. At the memorial you can trace the wall’s course, walk along its former path, learn about its history, view photos and read personal stories from the time. To this day it serves as a powerful reminder of the past to all who visit.
