Mauna Kea, located on Hawai’i’s Big Island, is one of the world’s tallest mountains at 4,207 m or 13,796 Feet. A popular destination for nature-lovers and stargazers, Mauna Kea offers stunning photographs and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean from its summit. Hiking to the summit is an adventurous journey and can be quite challenging due to its uneven and rocky terrain. The mountain is home to 13 mountain observatories, the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station, and a nearby 8,000 footer drive-way provides access to the summit. Touring the observatories is an amazing experience and visitors can take part in stargazing programs such as Summitting for Science and Stargazing at the Summit. Mauna Kea is also home to numerous endangered species and a trip here should include a visit to the Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Reserve and a stop at the Native Hawaiian Cultural Center to learn more about the rich history of the local people.
