📍 From Boat, Norway
Bergen’s historic harbour wraps around Vågen, the inlet at the heart of the city, with Bryggen along its eastern waterfront and the Nordnes peninsula to the west. Bryggen’s tightly packed wooden merchant buildings recall Bergen’s role in the Hanseatic trading network, when stockfish from northern Norway was a major export. Their narrow gabled fronts, painted in ochre, red and pale tones, give the harbour its recognizable skyline, backed by hillside houses and the wooded slopes of Fløyen. Views across the inlet show the façades as a continuous waterfront, while closer perspectives reveal timber textures and passages between the buildings. At the inner end of Vågen, the Fish Market connects the harbour’s trading history with its continuing association with seafood; moored vessels and reflections keep the water central to the scene.
