Bergamo is a two-tiered city in Lombardy whose compact medieval core, the Città Alta, sits atop a limestone ridge above the modern Città Bassa. The upper town’s stone-paved lanes, arcaded squares and the open Piazza Vecchia cluster around the tall civic bell tower (the Campanone) and are ringed by conspicuous fortified walls that follow the hill’s contour. Photographically, Bergamo rewards with tight textures—weathered stone, brick facades and wrought iron—contrasting with wide panoramic views from the Rocca or San Vigilio hill that frame the plain and distant mountains; golden-hour side light and morning mist accentuate the town’s layers. A historic funicular provides a direct, visible link between the two levels.
