Bergamo is a Lombard city split between the lower, modern Città Bassa and the elevated medieval Città Alta that crowns a limestone hill above the plain. The upper town is defined by narrow cobbled lanes, tight stone buildings and the long ring of Venetian defensive walls encircling its terraces, while Piazza Vecchia concentrates civic architecture with the Palazzo della Ragione and the ornate Colleoni Chapel. Photographically, the city offers layered compositions: the ochre facades and arcades of Città Alta in the foreground, the regular grid of Città Bassa below and the Po Valley and distant alpine ridges framing the horizon. The funicular that links the two levels provides immediate, postcard perspectives of the slope and the fortified ridge. Respect for quiet in the historic centre complements composed, detail-rich shots of textures, bas-reliefs and narrow light-filled alleys.
