Bell Tower
📍 Canada
The Bell Tower is one of the most iconic structures in Montréal and a symbol of the city’s French-Canadian history. The ornamented bell tower of the Montréal Notre-Dame Basilica is perhaps the city’s most emblematic landmark. Built in 1843, the 79ft tower was designed by Victor Bourgeau, a renowned Canadian architect. It stands four stories tall and is faced with grey limestone, thus reflecting its original purpose as the bell tower of the basilica. While the bell tower used to house a clock, the 19th-century timepiece has since been replaced with modern machinery. From the Bell Tower, visitors can appreciate sweeping views of Old Montréal, including Place d'Armes, the Montréal's Notre-Dame Basilica, and even the St. Lawrence River. The site is further punctuated by a statue of Marguerite Bourgeoys, the controversial French-Canadian Catholic teacher who established the first school of Montréal. A visit to the Bell Tower promises a moment of reflection and appreciation for one of Montréal’s oldest and grandest structures.
