Beachy Head Lighthouse stands in the English Channel beneath the chalk cliffs near Eastbourne, East Sussex, where the South Downs meet the sea. Completed in 1902, it replaced the clifftop Belle Tout lighthouse, whose elevated light could be obscured by mist and low cloud. The red-and-white tower rises 43 metres, yet looks small against the immense white cliff face behind it—a distinctive contrast that gives photographs here their sense of scale. From the clifftop, the scene is defined by the tower’s isolated position offshore, the pale chalk coastline and the changing colour of the water. At low tide, exposed rock around its base adds texture to the otherwise spare composition.
