The Basilica of St Elizabeth of Hungary is a monumental Gothic brick church beside the northwestern corner of Wrocław’s Market Square. From the Reformation until the end of the Second World War, it served the city’s Lutheran community; today it is a Catholic garrison church, reflecting the city’s changing religious history. Its tall tower is a defining feature of the Old Town skyline, and the viewing platform, reached by a long staircase, overlooks the square and the surrounding red-tiled rooftops. At the church’s approach stand the small Jaś and Małgosia houses, named for Hansel and Gretel and connected by an arch. Their intimate scale contrasts with the basilica’s massive walls, creating one of the area’s most recognizable streetscapes.
