📍 Germany
Bayreuth, in Upper Franconia in northern Bavaria, is closely associated with opera, but its two celebrated theaters tell different stories. The 18th-century Margravial Opera House has an elaborately decorated Baroque interior in the historic center; the Festspielhaus stands on the Green Hill, built for Richard Wagner’s operas and home to the annual Bayreuth Festival. Wagner’s former home, Wahnfried, adds a more personal dimension to the city’s musical history.
