📍 France
Bayonne stands at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers, where the French Basque Country meets the Atlantic plain. Its historic center spreads across Grand Bayonne and Petit Bayonne, linked by bridges and lined with narrow, tall houses whose painted shutters and timbered façades reflect the city’s mercantile past. The Gothic spires of Sainte-Marie Cathedral rise above the red-tiled roofs, while ramparts and fortified structures recall Bayonne’s strategic role near the Spanish border. Along the Nive, arcaded quays, riverside cafés, fishing boats, and reflections of colorful buildings create the city’s most recognizable views, especially when low light emphasizes the façades and water. Basque and Gascon influences remain visible in its architecture, food traditions, and street life.
