Batterie de Leffrinckoucke
📍 France
The Batterie de Leffrinckoucke is a stretch of low-lying concrete coastal fortifications at the edge of the North Sea near Dunkirk, where wartime gun casemates punctuate the dune line. Its interest lies in the raw materiality and defensive geometry of 20th‑century military engineering set against a natural shoreline: thick walls, embrasures and rooflines that read as horizontal planes echoing the flat sea horizon. Photographically, the site rewards compositions of textures and scale — cracked concrete, rusted fittings and the distant shipping lane create layered foreground-to-background depth; sunrise and low overcast light accentuate concrete relief and long shadows along the dunes. The battery sits immediately adjacent to the beach and is visible from the shore, making the interaction between manmade form and coastal landscape the defining visual story.
