The Bastei is a dramatic sandstone rock formation above the Elbe Valley in Saxon Switzerland, within the municipality of Lohmen. Its best-known feature is the arched sandstone Bastei Bridge, completed in 1851 to replace an earlier wooden structure and spanning the weathered pinnacles near the remains of Neurathen rock castle. The bridge’s repeated arches, sheer cliffs and layered valley backdrop create the site’s defining compositions, while overlooks reveal the Elbe winding past wooded slopes and the distinctive table mountains of the region. Mist often simplifies the landscape into receding silhouettes, whereas clear light emphasizes the pale, eroded texture of the sandstone. The surrounding terrain lies within Saxon Switzerland National Park, so visitors should remain on designated paths and respect any conservation closures.
