Bassano del Grappa stands on the Brenta River in Veneto, where the plain meets the foothills below Monte Grappa. Its defining landmark is the Ponte Vecchio, a covered wooden bridge based on Andrea Palladio’s 1569 design and rebuilt after floods and wartime destruction. Also known as the Ponte degli Alpini, it is closely associated with Italy’s mountain troops. From the riverbanks, the bridge’s timber supports and long roofline stand out against warm-toned waterside façades, with mountain slopes rising beyond the town. The historic center gathers around Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi, where arcades and the medieval civic tower give the streets a different rhythm from the open river views. Ceramic craftsmanship and grappa distillation are enduring local traditions; Nardini’s historic Grapperia at the bridge entrance makes the latter a visible part of Bassano’s best-known scene.
