Basilique Saint-Épvre rises over Place Saint-Épvre in Nancy’s historic Ville Vieille, close to the ducal palace and medieval street plan. Built in the 19th century to designs by Prosper Morey, it replaced an earlier parish church and expresses the era’s taste for monumental Neo-Gothic architecture. Its richly carved façade, pointed arches, rose window and exceptionally slender spire create a strong vertical contrast with the lower buildings around the square. From the open plaza, the full western front can be framed with cafés and street life, while closer views reveal layered stone sculpture and intricate tracery. Inside, soaring vaults and extensive stained glass give the basilica a cooler, more luminous character than its busy urban setting suggests.
