The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre is the prominent white-domed basilica that crowns Paris’s Montmartre hill, marking the city’s highest natural point and anchoring a historic artists’ neighborhood. Its Romano‑Byzantine massing — stacked domes, rounded arches and a tripartite façade — reads like a deliberate visual counterpoint to Gothic cathedral silhouettes elsewhere in Paris. The stone used is a pale travertine noted for releasing calcite over time, which keeps the exterior unusually bright and almost luminous from distance. Photographically, the composition is defined by the broad flight of steps and raised esplanade that frame the basilica against the city; the domes create strong curves and concentric symmetry, while the broad plaza offers unobstructed skyline sweeps and layered foregrounds of people and trees. Inside, the enormous apse mosaic of Christ in Majesty provides a dense, gilded focal point contrasting with the exterior’s whiteness. The site’s prominence on the hill makes it an enduring compositional landmark in Paris views.
