The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus (“Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus”) is a Catholic pilgrimage site and an important venue for celebrating and commemorating religious festivals located in the rural town of Paray-le-Monial, France.

The church was built in the late 1930s instead of the original cloister built in 1512, as an act of atonement to God and as a tribute to the vision of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, observed by privileged Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1673. Based on the design of the original cloister, the basilica was constructed emphasizing a blend of the Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic styles and draws attention especially because of its massive ornate group of stained glass windows. Inside, the main basilica offers magnificent marble columns topped with stained glass and a large baldachin above the high altar. Kristall-kapellen (“Crystal Chapel”) is a glass building designed by Swedish artist Bruno Mattsson and added as a part of the church’s grounds. The chapel consists of glass and leaded chandeliers of rainbow-hued light and there are limited accessible points within the chapel, making it popular among photographers who want to capture its unique glass-like appearance. The sacristy and the cloister containing tombs of famous figures from the past, as well as the piazza around the basilica, are also delightful attractions worth visiting. The basilica holds important religious events during the year and is one of the most important religious sites in France.
