The Basilika St. Alexander und St. Theodor is the large former Benedictine abbey church at the heart of Ottobeuren, Bavaria, forming the centerpiece of the monastic complex. Visually and architecturally it is a Baroque-Rococo interior played out on a grand scale: a long, symmetrical nave rising into richly modeled stucco and expansive ceiling frescoes, gilded ornament and a prominent high altar and organ loft that anchor the east end. Photographers will find strong axial lines, repetitive columns and curving galleries that produce dramatic depth, while pale plaster and abundant gold create high-contrast highlights under daylight from clerestory windows. As an active church within the abbey precinct, its visual drama is experienced from both the nave and the monastery courtyards that frame the façade.
