The Basilica of the Assumption stands at the heart of Ettal Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in an Alpine valley near Oberammergau. The abbey was founded in 1330 by Emperor Louis IV, while the church’s present Baroque and Rococo character largely reflects reconstruction after a major fire in 1744. Its pale, richly articulated façade and broad copper-green dome form a striking contrast with the surrounding forested slopes. Inside, elaborate stucco, gilded ornament and a vast frescoed cupola emphasize the centralized space and create strong symmetry when viewed along the nave. The basilica remains an active place of worship and pilgrimage, so visitors should photograph discreetly and avoid disrupting services.
