Basilica San Lorenzo Maggiore is a historic basilica located in the heart of Milan, Italy. Constructed in the 4th century, it was the first true cathedral of Milan, as numerous previous churches had held the title without being true basilicas. The church is famous for its early Christian mosaics and later frescoes. The 11th-century apse mosaic, depicting Christ Pantokrator, is one of the most striking works in the building. The interior is divided into three naves and is richly decorated with works from the Lombard workshops of the 5th, 12th and 14th centuries. The basilica also houses one of the chambers where the Sala delle Asse, which contains a fresco by da Vinci, is particularly renowned. You can explore the many chapels and marvel at the magnificent architecture of the church's Renaissance facade. The basilica also features a crypt with several important tombs, including that of Archbishop Carlo Borromeo.
