The Basilica Parrocchiale Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, Italy is an impressive church located in the iconic Piazza del Popolo. Dating back to 1099, the basilica underwent extensive remodeling in the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries and still retains many of its original features. It is most famous for its beautiful frescoes and its exquisite paintings by Renaissance master Caravaggio. There are also two impressive chapels, one dedicated to St. Sebastiano and the other to St. Gregorio. Inside, visitors can find the tomb of Vittoria Colonna, a 16th-century poetess, and countless works of art housed in the Sacrament Chapel. The church also houses interesting artifacts related to the ancient cult of Cybele, the Roman goddess represented as a lion-bodied figure. Though the basilica is not open to the public, visitors can enjoy the exterior and its Piazza del Popolo surroundings.
