A major attraction for pilgrims and art lovers, Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore stands on the summit of the Esquiline Hill, showcasing a blend of architectural styles that reflect its long history. Its interior includes one of the city’s best-preserved Byzantine mosaics, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, while the coffered ceiling is famously said to be gilded with the first gold brought from the Americas. Visitors can explore the monumental column, bell tower—Rome’s tallest—and chapels filled with Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces. Modest attire is required, and entry is generally free, though donations are welcome. The site is served by several bus routes and is a short walk from the Termini station.
