The Basilica of Esztergom is an important part of the Hungarian culture and history. It is the largest church in Hungary and one of the oldest Christian monuments in the country. Located on a hill overlooking the Danube and dedicated to Saint Adalbert of Prague, the basilica was first built in the 11th century. Later, it was rebuilt and enlarged during the reign of Queen Maria Theresa in the 18th century and now covers an area of approximately 5,000 m2. It has an impressive interior full of religious art treasures, an ornate pulpit and beautiful frescoes from the 19th century. The four turrets are also notable and make a great photo opportunity from the square in the front of the basilica. Entrance to the Basilica is free and from the top of its dome you have an amazing view of the Danube and the village of Esztergom. Esztergom is known as the religious and spiritual capital of Hungary and its basilica is an important symbol of the country's past and present.
