The Basilica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepción, located in the municipality of Jardín in Colombia, is without a doubt one of the most impressive religious buildings in the region. The church dates back to 1820 and its main features are a single nave and a dome, covered in intricate, colorful tiles inside and out. The façade of the basilica is decorated in Andean Baroque style, featuring the figure of the Immaculate Conception. Inside the church, visitors will find numerous decorative elements including stained glass windows, ornate columns and reliefs of saints and images of the Virgin Mary. The basilica seeks to reflect the culture and rich heritage of the people in the region. In the inner courtyard, there is a small shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary that is hung with prayer flags, which is celebrated every August 15th for the “Festival del Divino Niño”. Whether one is religious or not, this place is worth a visit for its beauty, history and culture.
