The Basilica inferiore di San Francesco is a Romanesque-style Catholic basilica located in Assisi, Italy. Constructed in the 13th century, it is one of the five basilicas in Assisi that together form the World Heritage Site of the “Sacro Convento di San Francesco d'Assisi.” It is possibly the most notable of the five basilicas since it is the place where St. Francis was buried in 1226. It is decorated with numerous frescos, several of which were created by Giotto. It also contains notable sculptures, such as the crucifix attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio and several frescos attributed to Cimabue. The crypt below the basilica holds the tomb of St. Francis, which can be visited. Visitors should note that photography is not allowed inside the basilica.
