The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe is a 6th Century Christian basilica in the Byzantine style located in Classe, Italy. Built over an early Christian cemetery with remains of a 5th century martyr, it was consecrated in 529 by bishop Ursicinus of Ravenna in honour of Sant’Apollinare Apocrisarius, martyr and first bishop of Ravenna. The basilica is in the shape of an octagon and features an impressive mosaic in the apse. The mosaics represent Jesus, his mother Mary and numerous saints and angels, as well as a crucifixion scene and the Lamb of God. The central part of the apse features the twelve apostles, with apostle Peter placed on the left side of the arch. Outside, there are three portals that lead to a series of five aisles. Visitors should also take notice of the remarkably well-preserved Roman sarcophagi outside the church.
