The 6th century Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe is one of the most beautiful and historically significant basilicas of the Ravenna area, in Italy. Despite the destruction caused by several earthquakes, it preserves the original grandeur it enjoyed in its first centuries, featuring some of the most renowned mosaics of the region. It has a unique octagonal shape and a spectacular cupola, and is the most ancient and largest of its kind in the northern east coast of Italy. Visiting the basilica, you can also admire the stunning interior decoration, including some of the original frescoes still visible, which were done in Constantinople’s style. Make sure to get the most exclusive view of the basilica and its age-old mosaics from its upper terraces, if available to visitors. Don’t miss to pay a visit to the archaeological museum located in the adjacent area, to learn more about the basilica’s history and its original frescoes.
