The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo, Italy is a beautiful and amazing example of Romanesque architecture. It was built in the 12th century, and it's still standing in its original form. It consists of a series of white marble arches that lead up to the main façade – an imposing, central rose window framed with even more marble. Inside the basilica, the main entrance leads to the transept and finally to the main apse with its incredible frescoes. The basilica is renowned for its remarkable splendor and its presence in the historic upper town of Bergamo. The church has a number of precious art works, such as the masterpiece of late Baroque art in the main altar and chapels, the stained glass windows of the transept and the extraordinary wood inlays of the Cappella Olgiati.
