📍 Italy
The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta and Chiesa di Santa Fosca form a portion of the parish church of Murano, an island in the Venetian Lagoon. The basilica dates back to the 10th century, while the church of Santa Fosca is a 15th century expansion. Together they form a timeless example of Venetian Gothic architecture, with intricate details, frescos, and a large, central dome. The design of the edifice is Venice's oldest example of Gothic-style architecture with a prominent corridor flanked with double chapels resembling a Latin cross. The Chiesa di Santa Fosca is especially noteworthy for its 15th century painted wooden ceiling with gold stars. Its Venetian style art and sculpture are also stunning. The church is open for worship and visitors absorb its stunning façade and plethora of art, as well as its unique place in Venetian history as the spiritual home of a Venetian parish. The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta and Chiesa di Santa Fosca are amongst the most important Gothic features of the city and forms a must-see landmark of Venice all year round.
