The Basilica di Santa Chiara is a 13th-century Gothic church on the southeastern side of Assisi’s historic center, dedicated to Saint Clare, founder of the Poor Clares and a close companion of Saint Francis. Her tomb lies in the crypt, while a chapel preserves the painted San Damiano crucifix associated with Francis’s call to rebuild the Church. The façade’s horizontal bands of pink and white local stone, centered on a large rose window, give the basilica a distinctive identity against Assisi’s hillside buildings. Massive exterior buttresses add a striking structural rhythm along one side, contrasting with the restrained geometry of the front. The open piazza provides space to frame the façade and its separate bell tower, with views across the Umbrian valley extending beyond the church.
